What is Acupuncture?

There are a few different theories about how acupuncture works. One theory suggests that acupuncture needles inserted into the body stimulate nerves and release chemicals that help to change the way the brain perceives pain.

Another theory posits that acupuncture releases endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, which help to reduce pain. It is also thought that acupuncture may help to increase blood flow and improve immune function.

A Session With an Acupuncturist at Push Pounds

If you’re considering trying acupuncture, it’s important to find a licensed practitioner who has received training from an accredited institution. During your first session, your practitioner will ask you about your medical history and the symptoms you are experiencing.

They will then proceed to insert needles into various points on your body. The needles are usually inserted shallowly and cause minimal discomfort. You may feel a tingling sensation or slight numbness at the needle insertion site.

After the needles have been inserted, they will be left in place for 20-30 minutes while you relax. Some people may experience relief from their symptoms immediately after their session, while others may need several sessions before noticing a difference.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

The exact mechanism by which acupuncture works is not fully understood. It is thought that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and releases chemicals in the brain that help to reduce pain and promote healing.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Push Pounds is a registered clinic with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO).

This means that our team of highly trained and experienced practitioners is held to the highest standards when providing safe and effective acupuncture treatments.

Clinical acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate healing. Acupuncture is considered an effective and safe treatment by a trained and experienced practitioner.

That said, you should be aware of a few potential risks associated with acupuncture before booking a treatment.

Are treatments covered on my benefits/insurance?

All of our therapists are registered acupuncturists. If your insurance plan includes acupuncture, our treatments will likely be covered. But every insurance plan is different. Please consult your organization or insurance company to see if our services are covered before scheduling an appointment.

Most of our appointments come with acupuncture. If for any reason, you did not have acupuncture at your appointment, we will not bill your insurance company for it.

On April 1, 2013, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care passed a bill making acupuncture a profession that the government regulates.

In order to legally practice acupuncture in Ontario, acupuncturists must pass exams and background checks. This ensures that patients are safe when receiving acupuncture treatment.

All of the therapists at the Push Pounds are full members of CTCMPAO. This governing body dictates the laws and practice of acupuncture in Ontario. Each therapist has a designation number required to practice in this province.
