Pilates is a type of exercise that was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 20th century during the First World War to help hospitalized soldiers stay strong. Pilates is a gentle form of exercise that focuses on the activation and control of the body’s stabilizing muscles which includes your core, glutes and scapular muscles. Pilates involves gentle low impact exercise using your own body weight, equipment (reformers) or small weights, to waken up postural muscles and improve how you move. The principals of pilates align well with the principals of physiotherapy as both strive to increase body awareness, improve posture and quality of movement. As such pilates can be a great addition to any rehabilitation plan and is suitable for almost anyone.
